What is RSS?
Written by PLRMan on October 8, 2008 – 4:02 pm -RSS stands for more than one thing. RSS usually stands for “really simple syndication” but it also can be “rich site summary” or “RDF site summary”.
The meaning behind, ’RDF’ is resource description framework. That should help explaining the meaning associated with RSS, now let’s look at what it can do.
Exactly what is RSS in the realm of really simple syndication? RSS is a tool that permits sites to give a fast summary of important links and descriptions in the XML format. Basically this will permit you to syndicate content by allowing other blog owners and webmasters that have a specific topic summary, to use it as part of their list.
Blogmasters and webmasters collect these various summaries with something called a feed aggregator or a feed reader. Rather than asking, “what is RSS”, this tool will ask “where is RSS” and then find it.
An aggregator finds RSS feeds to aggregate from selected large sites, such as Yahoo and MSN, and selected smaller sites, such as hand-picked personal blogs and news sites.
The blogmasters and webmasters then take the script generated from the aggregator and insert it into their blogs. The RSS feed is then created in this way and will automatically start pulling news items and blog posts each time they come up. Whenever the blog or site page is refreshed, it will display the latest items.
This is good for two reasons. By using your own RSS feed, you will be able to have your content distributed across the internet without having to pay each time you submit a press release, or contact other blog owners and webmasters.
Additionally, using RSS feeds is good if you own a blog and want to add fresh content. You will be able to put new content links and summaries anytime you want but without taking a lot of time to search out related information. All you will have to do is select a feed aggregator, then select potential feeds from a list of news sites and authority blogs. Additionally, you will be able to input your own selections, allowing you to create custom feeds.
So what is RSS? Simply put, using RSS is a very easy way to generate traffic to your blog and to display additional summaries you find on other blogs.
“How the hell do you feed over 100 blogs?”
That’s the question I get asked most of all but the answer is easy. I don’t, Syndicate Kahuna feeds them for me with on topic, unique posts and it doesn’t cost a dime for the content!
